DeWalt DCS438 20V MAX XR 3″ Brushless Cut-Off Tool Review

DeWalt DCS438 20V MAX XR 3 inch brushless cut-off tool

Mini Review

Compact cutoff tool that earns its spot in the bag. The 3-inch blade is the whole point — it gets into spaces where a standard 4.5-inch grinder won’t fit, which on remodel and tile work comes up more than you’d think. If you’re on DeWalt 20V already, it’s a straightforward add.

Overview

The DCS438 is DeWalt’s 20V MAX XR brushless 3-inch cut-off tool. It spins at 20,000 RPM, cuts up to 7/8 inch deep, and runs forward or reverse so you can direct sparks and debris away from you. It has an LED, a removable dust shroud with an adjustable shoe and AIRLOCK extractor connection, and a hex wrench for wheel changes. The tool-only kit includes three wheels: bonded abrasive for metal, diamond multi-material and diamond tile.

What We Like

  • The 3-inch wheel gets into spaces a 4-1/2 inch grinder can’t.
  • Comes with three wheels for metal, tile and mixed materials.
  • Forward and reverse to control where sparks and dust go.
  • Dust shroud with extractor connection.
  • LED for dark spaces.

What We Don't Like

  • 7/8-inch max depth. Thick stock still needs a bigger saw.
  • Tool only; you need a 20V battery and charger.

First Impressions

Lighter than I expected for a cutoff tool — sits comfortable in one hand without feeling flimsy. The guard adjusts without blocking your view of the cut line, which is not always the case on smaller cutoff tools (in fact the Ryobi version we tested was frustrating on that front). Spins up fast. First cut through a ceramic tile came out clean, no chipping on the face. The hex wrench for wheel changes is stored right on the tool.

Full Review

Ran this on a bathroom remodel — cutting backer board, PVC trim, and some metal strapping over two days. Blade held through the full job without needing a swap. The smaller diameter is actually an advantage on interior work where you’re making short precise cuts in tight clearances…not long straight rips where you’d reach for a bigger saw anyway.

One honest limitation: 3 inches won’t handle thick stock. For dimensional lumber or anything over an inch you’ll still need a different saw. That’s the trade-off for the compact size, not a flaw in the tool.

If you’re not already on 20V DeWalt, factor in the cost of a battery. If you are, there’s not much to think about. Recommended for Handyman and Contractor.
