Makita XFD10 Drill/Driver Review

This is a work horse drill in a “compact” design. Fast recharge in only 25 minutes and it comes with two batteries and the best charger on the market. So, we have rated this as our #1 Driver/Drill.

What We Like
- Fit and Feel is great
- Good for all size hands.
- All metal gear construction
- Strong chuck with no slippage once tightened.
What We Don't Like
- Will not accept older Makita batteries.
- Warranty period.
The size of this drill is described by Makita as “compact”. I would describe as just right. This drill is well balanced (with the battery) and doesn’t feel too large or too small. I handed the drill to a few of my friends (and my wife) to see if anyone would say anything different. Guess what? Everyone, regardless of hand size, thought it was perfectly sized.

- STAR – on-board technology allows the tool and battery to communicate to protect against overheating, over discharging, and overloading.
- Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) which is designed to resist water and dust in job site conditions
- 3.3 lbs with battery
- 7-1/4″ length
- All metal gear construction

The XFD10R Driver-Drill kit will meet all of the needs that a driver-drill can. This is our top pick from all of the drills in this category (that we reviewed). The ergonomics are perfect; I’m not sure what I would change if I could. The kit comes with two 2.0Ah batteries that will fully charge in 25 minutes. This is possible because the batteries are charged by the Makita optimum charger which communicates with the on-board chip in the battery. The charger comes with a built-in cooling fan and will optimize battery life by controlling current, temperature, and voltage. It’s not the most affordable kit that we’ve reviewed but it will perform for all three of our The Tool Space users: DIY, Handyman, and Contractor.
