Dewalt DCD777 Drill Review

Mini Review
As can be expected with Dewalt, it’s a solid unit with a good ergonomic design. It is well built and feels sturdy without being overweight. I would definitely recommend this drill with two small concerns: the plastic ratcheting chuck and the max RPM being 1,600. In our testing, we did not notice any issues with the power, but by the specifications, it does fall short of the competition. Of all the drills reviewed, this is our second favorite behind the Makita XFD10.

First Impressions
“It’s very sturdy and I like it”. These were my first thoughts when I opened the box and grabbed the drill. The Dewalt DCD777 feels well built and balanced. The handle and grip are slightly larger than the Makita XFD10 and the Metabo HPT but still feel great. The grip might be slightly oversized for small hands but if you’ve never held the others, you wouldn’t notice anything. The connection between the battery and drill is secure without any rattle.

Dewalt has made another very capable compact drill/driver with a couple of small concerns (that only time will tell). The great thing about this kit (drill, two batteries, charger, and bag) is you get everything you need to perform a lot of drilling tasks. The drill has an average run time based on our battery testing and lines up with most of the competition. This drill handled the workload of drilling through a bunch of substrates and driving screws in some really dense hardwood. The couple of concerns we have didn’t show up in our testing but we do want to make you aware. Firstly, the ratcheting chuck sleeve is plastic…….like I said we didn’t have any issues with tightening the chuck and it holding but it could be a concern down the line. The second concern is the RPMs maxing out at 1,600. The majority of the drills we have tested in this price range all have 1,800+. We didn’t notice any issues drilling through masonry, hardwood, metal, etc but we did want to mention it. All in all, this was our second favorite drill that we have tested and would be more than happy to have this drill on a jobsite with us. Recommended for: DIY, Handyman, and Contractor
